Members of the Sikkim Against the Citizenship Amendment Act (SACAA) on Friday expressed apprehension about the state government’s seriousness about implementing the Inner Line Permit in the state and exemption from the provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

According to SACAA coordinator Passang Sherpa, they will soon be bringing home the matter to Governor of Sikkim Ganga Prasad and the state government.

He added that the forum will also be explaining the importance of ILP and what they termed as the dangers of CAA.

“SACAA is committed to achieve the ILP implementation in Sikkim, to safeguard the future of Sikkim and its people,” said coordinator Sherpa, adding that public is worried about it.

However historically, ILP, the legacy of Colonialism, has been carried forward in some states of Northeast, for the protection of the tribal population, with slight amendment. It allows Indian citizens to visit these states for fixed duration and on prior permission, whether for touring, vocation or anything else.

Presently, it is anticipated to keep new citizens, made so under CAA out of these NE states and they will not be able to settle there. Though Sikkim is protected by old laws, but due to the impact of modernisation and development, people appear to be apprehensive, he said.
