An FIR has been lodged against an assistant professor of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya for allegedly violating the COVID-19 protocol. The NEHU teacher reportedly returned to Meghalaya from Assam two days ago violating Covid-19 norms. The FIR was filed by executive magistrate of West Garo Hills district JD Sangma at the Tura police station on Friday.

According to the FIR, assistant professor Sasikumar R returned from Tezpur in Assam and entered the State through the Bajengdoba check point in North Garo Hills in his own vehicle on July 8. At the check point, he was asked to report at the ISBT, Chasingre, on the outskirts of Tura for spot registration and medical examination.

He, however, did not report at the centre and went directly to his rented accommodation on the RC Road in Tura. He also did not inform the development committee of the locality about his arrival. On inquiry it was learnt that he did not have a valid registration or car pass, and he only produced an expired pass at the check point.

The FIR sought action against him for entering the State without registration and a valid pass by violating the government orders. Action was also sought against him for not complying with the instructions given at the Bajengdoba check point and not reporting at the ISBT. Sasikumar has also been accused of putting public safety in peril by violating the measures taken by the authorities concerned to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
