The Meghalaya government will discuss the issue of floods in West Garo Hills with the Brahmaputra Board in Guwahati. State water resources minister B Nongsiej said this on Friday while visiting the erosion-prone areas in the plain belt of West Garo Hills district.

Minister Nongsiej’s visit came in the wake of appeals made by local MLA Azad Zaman as well as the local residents for a solution to the erosion problem that has posed a threat to their land lying along the Brahmaputra and its tributary, Jinjiram. Several villages, including Quijani, Rajpur, Old Bhaitbari, and Gomaijhora have already lost huge tracts of land due to floods and erosion.

“We are happy that the minister gave an assurance to look into the erosion issue. The situation is critical and requires immediate attention,” Zaman said. The MLA pointed out that many people have lost their land due to the annual floods and this will continue to happen if no action is taken.
