Odd-even system for movement of vehicles will be implemented under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 in all areas within Kohima municipality for public safety and to minimize non-essential movement of vehicles. The system will come into force from June 22 to June 30 except on June 28 (Sunday), Kohima senior superintendent of police Kevithutho Sophie said in a release on Friday.

On odd dated day, the vehicles with registration number ending with odd numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 will be allowed to ply. The vehicles with registration number ending with even number 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 will be allowed to ply on even dated day. However, this restriction will not apply to emergency service vehicles belonging to police, prison, administration, paramilitary, medical, NST buses, government staff buses, fire services, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and State
Disaster Response Force.

Press and two-wheelers, trucks carrying emergency medical equipments/commodities and L.P.G cylinders and inter-state trucks carrying essential commodities bound for Manipur are also exempt from the restriction. Violators of the restriction order will be penalized, the release said. The police urged the employees of the government departments to take staff bus instead of private vehicle during this period to help minimize traffic congestion.
