Over 1,900 youths lose jobs amid COVID-19 crisis
More than 1900 youths in Mizoram, who have returned from different parts of the country, lost their jobs due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus, an official of Mizoram Youth Commission (MYC) said on Wednesday. The official said that the youths were either sacked or resigned while working in different states.
He said that that the youth commission on Monday held a meeting with certain departments, including employment skill development and entrepreneurship, tourism, planning and programme implementation, disaster management and rehabilitation, urban development and poverty alleviation, and commerce and industries to find out and purse youths who have lost jobs while stranded in different parts of the country due to the nationwide lockdown imposed to curtail the spread of novel coronavirus.
The meeting also deliberated about expediting measures to assist the Covid-19 affected youths to ensure that they earn livings, he said.
According to the official, MYC chairman Dr Vanlaltanpuia while expressing regret for the jobless youths told the meeting that the youth commission will stand with the youths and take massive efforts to help them expose their skills and values to the outside world. Vanlaltanpuia, who is also the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator from Lunglei North seat, said that the MYC has evolved a Covid Plan to inform various job opportunities through skill development and training to Covid-19 affected youths, the official said.
The official said that the youth commission is also working on a job portal to facilitate close contact between the commission and youths, who are looking for jobs. He said that the commission will focus on skill development for the Covid-19 affected youth returnees for which talks are on with various skill-based development training institutes in the state. The commission with the help of other departments will also make plans to help migrant workers in the state, he added.
