Meghalaya: After fresh clashes in Shillong, curfew reimposed, mobile internet suspended

Curfew was reimposed on Saturday in some areas of Shillong after two people were killed during fresh clashes in the city’s Bara Bazar area earlier in the morning.

At least two people have been killed and several others injured since Friday after clashes between KSU members and non-tribals during a meeting on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and inner line permit (ILP) in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district.The deceased have been identified as Lurshai Hynniewta and Rupchand Dewan.

On Saturday, miscreants had attacked few non-tribals at Lewduh (Bara Bazar) area in Shillong where 10 people were injured.Police said that the non-tribals were stabbed by some miscreants in the area and the injured persons were immediately admitted to a civil hospital in the capital city of Meghalaya.

A vegetable vendor, identified as 29-year-old Rupchand Dewan, who hailed from Bhela Nawgaon in Assam’s Barpeta district, had succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.Other injured persons have been identified as Akash Ali, Ajay Kuri, Rikesh Das, Satya Mudak, Deepak Kumar, Pradeep Kuri, Aman Kumar Shah, Jadur Choudhury and Shubham Nath.

As per the release issued late on Saturday, two CAPF companies have been deployed at Ichamati and six more will be deployed soon.Amid clashes, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has appealed for peace saying that people should refrain from any kind of violent activities.
