The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) on Wednesday directed the Upper Assam Division Commissioner to inquire the condition of relief camps where about 7,000 people have been put up following the Baghjan gas blowout. The AHRC was acting to a complaint received from one Hurojit Moran. Moran, in his complaint, informed the commission about the pitiable condition of 12 relief camps.

He said these camps lacked proper food and drinking water facilities. The AHRC, in its directive, said that the inquiry report should be submitted within two months from the date of receipt of the notice. The report should further highlight the steps taken by the Tinsukia district administration to improve the condition of the camps, the AHRC said.

The commission further said that the report should include the steps taken by the district administration with the help of Oil India Limited to provide essential commodities, including drinking water, health care facilities to people sheltered in the camps. It may be mentioned here that after the blowout, villagers from the nearby villages had to hurriedly leave their houses.
