Spike in COVID-19 positive cases in Meghalaya due to people coming from outside
The COVID-19 positive cases in Meghalaya are slowly increasing, thanks to people who came from outside the state. The state’s tally has risen to 52 including nine active cases after one person who came from Guwahati in Assam tested positive for COVID-19 in Khliehriat, East Jaiñtia Hills district on Tuesday.
Out of 52 positive cases, the first COVID-19 patient, Dr John L Sailo Ryntathiang passed away on April 15 after he was tested positive on April 13. Of the COVID-19 positive cases, only 11 people, including Dr Sailo did not have travel history, and the rest 41 positive cases were persons who came to the state from other states of India. So far, 42 positive patients have recovered from the disease. In April, two domestic helps, and eight family members of Dr Sailo had tested positive for Coronavirus and they have all recovered.
One army personnel of the Assam Regimental Centre and three BSF personnel and the wife of a Border Security Force (BSF) driver had tested positive after they returned to Meghalaya. The Meghalaya government has requested the Central government to put transfers and postings of Central Armed Police Forces, Banks and other Central government employees on hold. They government made the request as the situation in the state is not conducive especially when COVID-19 positive cases are increasing in the country.
