Meghalaya boy from remote Garo Hills comes 2nd in Techniche Half Marathon
Batsrang A Sangma, a 22-year-old under-graduate from the Garo Hills in Meghalaya came second in the Guwahati half marathon organized on Sunday.
The half marathon was a prelude to the 21st edition of Techniche – grand annual event of the Indian Insititute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-G).
Earlier this year, he had won the third edition of the Delhi Half Marathon in the non-elite (amateur, 18-25) category.
Such was the dominance of his performance that he was placed second in the overall run behind the professional (elite) run winner by just one minute.
Son of a farmer, Batsrang had also earlier ran the Kolkata Half Marathon coming third in the amateur category.
The 22-year-old is a degree student from Durama College in Tura.
The young athlete was also felicitated for his exploits at the Republic Day celebration this year.
Notably, former Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Dadenggre in West Garo Hills, Swapnil Tembe took note of his talents as a marathon runner.
Tembe used to organize races and marathons locally to encourage the rural talents.
He even started crowd funding campaign to support Batsrang and promote his talent.
Now the state of Meghalaya awaits for the day, when Batsrang will run along with professionals and bring laurels to his state and his region.
